Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in First Address
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his administration.
A Historic Figure
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

A Costly Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:
- Free childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating External Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past tweets.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
